Because Enhance® is made up of Captan and the proven fungicde Vitavax®., it protects your seed from a wide range of seed and seedling diseases in two important ways. As a true systemic, Vitavax actually penetrates the seed and then translocates within the seedling as it grows, providing the seedling with several weeks of important disease protection. Captan, on the other hand, provides protection against diseases that attack the surface of the seed.

Enhance protects wheat, barley and oats against loose smut, common bunt of wheat, covered smut, scab seedling blight, flag smut, seed rots and seedling disease.

Problems and Solutions

Problem: Loose smut of wheat and barley (Ustilago tritici, Ustilago nuda) is caused by wind-borne spores that infect the plant's flower and pass into the seed embryo. Infected smut spikes emerge from the boot earlier than healthy spikes. As the healthy plants begin to pollinate, the smutty heads rupture releasing dusty spore masses. If the infected seed is not treated before planting, the enveloped dormant spores will cause smutted heads in the next crop. Smutted plants rob moisture and plant nutrients while they produce no grain.

Solution: The systemic fungicide component Vitavax in Enhance penetrates into the seed and translocates into the plant to control the fungus infection. Only Enhance offers the systemic protection of Vitavax for help in controlling loose smut of wheat and barley in a dry drill box formulation.

Problem: Common Bunt-stinking smut of wheat (Tilletia spp.), loose and covered smut of oats (Ustilago avenae, Ustilago kolleri) and covered smut of barley (Ustilago hordei). Spores on the seed surface pass into the plant during early stages of germination and seedling development. This invasion produces masses of powdery spores instead of grain kernels. Although grain heads appear "normal", the seed has been replaced with smut balls which disseminate at harvest.

Solution: Both the Vitavax and Captan fungicides in Enhance help to control the disease by killing spores on the seed surface.

Problem: Scab of wheat and barley (Fusarium). Spores in the soil or seed, or on the seed, can cause seedling blight, damping-off or crown rot. Infected seed also reduce germination and result in lighter grain weight. If infected grain is used for seed, it may produce an infected crop.

Solution: With two-way protection, Enhance helps protect the seed and seedling from seed and soil-borne infection.

Problem: Seed rots and other seedling blights (Pythium and Rhizoctonia). A variety of disease organisms in the soil, or carried on the seed surface, attack seed or seedling to cause seed rot, damping-off or seedling blight of wheat, barley and oats. Result is a thin stand, infected plants and reduce yield.

Solution: Enhance provides protection to shield the seed against disease in the soil, and protection for the germinating and emerging seeding during the critical early stages of growth. Result is an improved stand and stronger plants, and often a higher yield.
